Bayer Young Environmental Envoy 2011

Bayer, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), proclaimed the 2011 Bayer Young Environmental Envoys at an award presentation ceremony held on August 18, 2011 at Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.

Twelve college students from different parts of the country were conferred as Bayer Young Environmental Envoys after successfully implementing their individual environmental projects, following a stringent selection process and nationwide search.

Of the 12, four were named to represent the country to a weeklong all-expense paid study tour of Germany in October. They are: Cris Raymond Viray of St. Paul University Quezon City, Alfie Desamparado of West Visayas State University, Reymart Canuel of University of Baguio, and Mary Jade Gabanes of West Visayas State University.

Other BYEEs are Michael Angelo Abarcar of University of Southern Philippines, Aura Patricia Azarcon of De La Salle University – Manila, Jerome Jose Fernandez of Universidad De Santa Isabel- Naga City, Ana Mae Lamentillo of the University of the Philippines-Los Banos, Masaki Mitsuhashi of the University of the Philippines-Manila, Mark Mathew Operiano of West Visayas State University, Christian Sorongon of the University of the Philippines-Visayas and Daren Ril Valenzuela of John Lacson Foundation Maritime University.

Plant a tree for peace!

LEAF International (Learning about Forest) and ENO (Environmental Online) invite all schools to plant trees for a sustainable future.

The event takes place on 21st of September 2011 - UN’s World Peace Day. It is part of a global campaign where more than 5000 schools in 150 countries will participate. Each participating school will receive a certificate.

A tree is a symbol for us. Firstly, it reminds us of nature and the importance of environmental protection. Secondly, it symbolizes our co-operation between schools around the world. We support cultural diversity and tolerance. As it is an international day for peace we mark these trees as peace trees. We hope to grow together with our trees in the future and for the future. Peace is green!

The first trees will be planted at noon in Oceania. Following the Sun, new trees will be put to earth in Asia, Europe and Africa. Finally this chain of trees will reach the Americas. The Earth turns on its axis once, and several hundred thousand new trees will have found their homes.

Clean Up the Philippines Movement, Inc. today called on Filipinos to help clean up their local communities.

Atty. Sharon E. Millan-Decano, Secretary-General of Clean Up the Philippines Movement said “The proper disposal of waste is of great concern to our communities. We are encouraging our members and volunteers to help educate their family members and communities on proper waste management and organize their own local clean-up event on Clean Up the Philippines Day on September 17, 2011.

Clean Up the Philippines Day will form part of Clean Up the World, a year-round community-led environmental campaign that takes place in local communities involving an estimated 35 million volunteers from 130 countries each year.

“We need the support of as many people as possible; it’s more important than ever that we take serious action to protect and promote our planet for the sake of our future generations.”

Clean Up the Philippines Day is generously supported by the Australian Embassy in Manila.

Clean Up the World founder and Chairman Ian Kiernan AO* sent a message of support to the local volunteers participating in the Clean Up the World campaign.

“By taking responsibility for their local area, volunteers from Clean Up the Philippines Campaign are playing a vital part in the worldwide effort to protect and preserve our planet. Clean Up the Philippines Movement is to be congratulated for taking leadership in their community – and every volunteer is to be congratulated for taking responsibility for their place on earth.”

Volunteers can get involved in the campaign by registering their clean-up events and other environmental activities at www.cleanupthephilippines.org.

Clean Up the World originated in Sydney, Australia in 1993 and is held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The campaign brings together non-government organisations, community groups, schools, governments, businesses and individuals to undertake activities to improve water quality, clean up local streets, parks, waterways and forests and educate children about the environment.

Earth Run 2011

In its third year, Solar Entertainment Network’s fun run dubbed Earth Run goes nationwide with three legs to be held in Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu.

After last years successful event, where over 8,000 runners took to the street to show their support for the environment, this year Earth Run looks to be even bigger and better. Divided between the networks three banner channels, ETC, 2nd Avenue and Jack TV, now runners and nature lovers from around the country can come together and run for a good cause.

For the 3rd consecutive year, Earth Run has chosen Greenpeace as its beneficiary. Greenpeace, is an international environmental organization that acts to change attitudes and behavior, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. Here in the Philippines, the organization and its supporters are focused on promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency, a nuclear-free Pilipinas, and keeping waterways clean.

Kicking off in Metro Manila, 2nd Avenue: Earth Run 2011 will be held at the Bonifacio Global City Grounds this August 28, Sunday. Runners can choose from four different distances: 3k, 5k, 10k, and 21k. All races have a registration fee of P600 except the 21k which is P650. Upon registration, participants will receive race kits that will include a timing chip, official race shirt, race bib belt and race details.

Those interested to join the Manila leg can register starting July 10 until August 21 at R.O.X. at Bonifacio High Street and Chris Sports branches located at Glorietta 3, SM City North The Annex and SM Megamall. Online registration is available at Runner’s Runner (www.runnersrunner.com/earthrun2011), Ad Events (www.adevents.com.ph) and the official race Facebook page (www.facebook.com/earthrun2011ph).

Each race finisher shall receive a special Earth Run sling bag, finisher’s certificate and sponsor giveaways. Trophies will be given to the Top 3 male and female finishers of each distance category courtesy of Cherifer Premium Capsule, while medals shall be given out to all finishers of the 21k race.

For those living in Davao and Cebu, they can look forward to Jack TV: Earth Run 2011 on October 9, Sunday and ETC: Earth Run 2011 happening on December 11, Sunday respectively.

3rd Environmental Seminar for Children

The Kalipunan ng mga Kabataan Para sa Kalikasan held its 3rd Annual Environmental seminar for children last June 4, 2010 at the multipurpose room of the St. Jude Thaddeus Parish in Marietta-Romeo Village, Pasig City. Active members participated in the seminar-workshop where they presented their views and thoughts on how they can help in the conservation of biodiversity.

The seminar was conducted by Mrs. Grace P. Sapuay, founder of Kalikasan.

Earth Day Special
